Honoree: The Extra Mile is a monument to American volunteer pioneers. The honorees have gone the extra mile to improve the lives of others. The Extra Mile monument is located in the heart of Washington, DC. Lafayette Park. Maj Gen Lafayette was a French officer military officer. He was given a commission in the Continental Army and proved to be a good commanding general. He also persuaded the French government to send military aid and soldiers to support the colonists. On the base to the right are French Admirals Francois Joseph Paul Comte de Grasse and Comte d'Estaing. These admirals were dispatched to the colonies to fight against the British navy.

Lafayette Park, among the other monuments in this series (front of the White House) Gen Rochambeau was the commanding general of the French forces that fought along side the Gen Washington and the Continental Army.

Located in Sherman's Park. This monument consists of a bronze equestrian statue of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) and a square platform with a bronze soldier at each corner, representing the four branches of the U.S. Army: infantry, artillery, cavalry, and engineers. President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the monument on October 15, 1903. . Relief medallions of generals who served under Sherman's command are located on the east and west sides of the granite pedestal. Around the base of the pedestal's terrace is a mosaic inlaid with the names of battles in which Sherman fought.
